Not sure what to expect?
I get it, I do. Therapy can be scary, and that feeling of initial fear is normal! It can seem daunting to bare your truth to a stranger. There’s nothing wrong with seeking help, but sometimes it feels like there is. If anxiety or fear is keeping you from seeking therapy, here is what to expect when doing therapy with me…
BEFORE OUR FIRST SESSION:
One of the first things that happens to begin our process is that you’ve reached out to me through my email, phone, Psychology Today page, or this website! When I receive your initial inquiry, I will go ahead and reach out to you as soon as possible to get some additional information from you. I will begin by confirming your availability, setting up our first appointment, and sending you any necessary paperwork. From there, you will work to complete your paperwork prior to our first meeting.
FIRST SESSION:
Our first session will probably be way less scary than you think! We’ll begin with introductions, and I’ll likely ask you what brought you my way. From there, I’ll ask you a bunch of informal interview-style questions to get to know you, your background, and your needs. We’ll dialogue, laugh, cry, and learn more about possible next steps. I will also map out what you expect your therapy journey to like, and what kind of a treatment plan we can set up for you. You will also learn more about me, and get to ask any questions or express any concerns along the way!
SUBSEQUENT SESSIONS:
From our second session onward, we’ll start to get into a groove and begin the “working therapeutic relationship.” We’ll begin with a brief check-in of your week, and either continue our discussion from prior sessions, or discuss something entirely new. You take the lead, and you choose what we talk about. We may also at time review a treatment plan, or discuss how effective your therapy feels, or if we need to be doing anything differently. You may get homework from me, but it can be fun, and it’s up to you if you do it!
